The Master of Arts in Teaching and Learning (MATL), a collaboration between WashU Continuing & Professional Studies (CAPS) and Teach St. Louis, trains both current and aspiring public school teachers in the St. Louis region.  Graduates are prepared to become leaders in their schools and classrooms, expanding opportunities for the students and families they serve.

The MATL offers pathways for educators at every stage of their career. The Teacher Leadership Program supports certified teachers currently working in high-needs schools.  Participants develop their instructional expertise through a two-year MATL or a one-year, 15-credit certificate. The Teacher Residency offers an innovative pathway for candidates to enter the teaching profession, earning both initial licensure and a master’s degree in two years. Candidates complete a full-year classroom apprenticeship, receiving a stipend during the residency and a guaranteed teaching position in their partner district. The Alternative Certification Program provides a rigorous and supportive pathway for teachers to earn their initial licensure and a master’s degree while serving as the teacher-of-record. Coursework is designed to meet the needs of a lead teacher and is facilitated in a hybrid format over the course of two academic years.
