WashU Continuing & Professional Studies (CAPS) New Student Orientation kicked off the 2025 spring semester last week with a wealth of information for new students to succeed in their academic and professional goals. Held in the evening and offered in both in-person and virtual formats to accommodate students’ busy lives, the event began with a networking session where new students had the opportunity to connect with each other and CAPS staff. Following the informal networking, students explored a variety of essential topics, including understanding WashU and CAPS systems, finding free or low-cost textbooks, accessing career development resources and discovering the technology support provided by the Tech Den.
Practical Tools for Success
Cheryl Holland, a WashU librarian, provided an informative session on textbook affordability and library resources. Her presentation showcased the many ways students can access vital learning materials without breaking the bank, including digital resources and interlibrary loan programs.
CAPS Student Pathways Manager Rebecca O’Laughlin introduced students to essential online platforms such as Canvas, WebSTAC and the CAPS website. She explained how using these tools play a crucial role in managing coursework, accessing grades and connecting with financial aid resources. Additionally, students learned about WashU’s comprehensive career development services from CAPS Career Specialist Jacquelin Meaders Booth on the tailored career coaching, resume reviews and professional development workshops. The orientation also included a preview of key dates and deadlines, ensuring students are well-prepared for the semester’s academic milestones.
Scott Markovich, Assistant Director of the WashU Tech Den, detailed the many services he provides WashU students, from laptop diagnostics and repairs to 3D printing and technology workshops. He also introduced resources like WUSTL Box, a cloud storage solution, and LinkedIn Learning, a platform offering free access to on-demand skill-building courses.
Building a Supportive Community
The CAPS orientation reinforced the school’s dedication to creating an inclusive and supportive environment. Students were introduced to the CAPS Student Success Team, who provide guidance on everything from academic planning to navigating campus resources. Attendees also learned about safety measures and tools such as the WashU SAFE app, which enhances campus security.
As the evening came to a close, students left with a clear sense of direction and a feeling of confidence, knowing they were part a supportive community at CAPS that will be available to guide them through their academic journey.
