Academic Pathways

English Language Programs has offered an academic and professional language support program for WashU graduate students and scholars for over 40 years. This program is designed to connect students’ and scholars’ knowledge of English with the skills of scholarship through courses in three academic pathways: academic writing, presentations and teaching and conversations.

The Academic Writing Pathway is designed to help students develop their English skills for success in writing academic papers.

The Conversational Pathway is designed to help students develop their English skills for talking with fellow students and professors on campus and in the broader St. Louis community.

The Presentation & Teaching Pathway is designed to help students develop their English skills, present their research and more effectively serve in a teaching capacity.

EMPOWER for Refugees

The EMPOWER program is specifically designed to help welcome qualifying New Americans to the St. Louis community by delivering hands on personal support in three key areas:

  • Upskill Career English language proficiency
  • Enroll and complete an in-demand, career-focused certificate at WashU Continuing & Professional Studies
  • Obtain gainful employment in the region in a meaningful career path

Prospective students participate in a short intake interview to determine and discuss eligibility, program fit as well as personal and career goals. Qualified applicants also take an English language proficiency exam (TABE CLAS-E) to quantifiably determine fluency in the four modalities of language: reading, writing, listening and speaking.
