CAPS Celebrates the Class of 2025

Despite a steady spring rain, spirits were high on May 12, 2025, as over 50 graduating students from WashU Continuing & Professional Studies (CAPS) gathered with family and friends to celebrate their accomplishments. The day began with WashU’s 164th Commencement ceremony on historic Francis Olympic Field, followed by the CAPS Recognition Ceremony held in Graham Chapel.

The ceremony highlighted the student dedication, persistence and hard work that brought them to this milestone moment. “It’s been a long time coming—many years working hard. Finally coming to fruition,” said graduate Maribel Chebuske. “Keep pushing through. It’s all worth it, every minute of it. Because you’ll see this day, and it’s just amazing.”

Dean Sean Armstrong opened the program by congratulating the graduates and recognizing the incredible resilience it takes to complete a degree while balancing work, family and life responsibilities.

Graduating student Jessica Shields echoed this sentiment: “It’s been a long road and a lot of work. To finally be able to recognize and celebrate is really exciting.”

The event also featured a keynote address by former dean Bob Wiltenburg, who led the school (then known as University College) from 1996 to 2015. His remarks focused on the success of the graduates and the significance of their achievement. He praised their determination to return to education with purpose and drive.

“Despite doubts you may have had, despite conflicting obligations—against the odds—you put in the patient toil and the midnight oil, often finding strengths you didn’t even know you had,” he told graduates. “You are the university’s most passionate and committed students and today we celebrate all of your sparkling accomplishments.”

Wiltenburg also emphasized that graduation marks not an ending but a transition into a new phase of impact and responsibility. He encouraged students to see themselves as part of a broader mission—contributing to a more just and compassionate world through knowledge, creativity and action.

That mission resonates for many, including graduate Nicole Kirk. “I have three boys,” she said. “So I wanted to show them that higher education is important, no matter what age you are or when you decide to get it completed.”
